Musical Trip-Tlingit Music

Image
Tlingit Music Being Tlingit myself, I thought it would be neat to learn more about my culture and try to help you learn a little about my culture as well. Tlingit music really came about for celebrating, potlucks, gatherings, and ceremonies. Some songs were also made to teach life lessons. First song Here is a song written by my Auntie Clara Peratrovich of Kake, Alaska.  The Hook Song. It is sung by Ed Littlefield.  USA, date-unknown. The Hook Song is so dear to my heart. I grew up singing this song with my dance group, Heeinya Khwaan. I also grew up watching my mom perform this song at every potluck, celebration, ceremony, and gathering. My mom was one of the few people my Auntie Clara Peratrovich taught to dance to this song she made. As you hear Ed Littlefield sing this song, you are able to hear how he uses the back of his throat to annunciate some of the words. You also hear in the song, a drum. Those two things made Tlingit music quite unique.  Here is a link of a traditional Tl

Innovations and Evolutions-The Piano

Image
How the Piano Came About The very first piano came about from Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori who was very inspired from the harpsichord, which he would build often. Cristofori invented the piano around the year of 1700, but it was originally called "painoforte". The similarities of the piano and harpsichord is that they are both stringed instruments that are wooden, but the harpsichord has two or more sets of strings inside and has two sets of keyboards. But the piano became very popular. According to Take Lessons, "The pianoforte became a favorite among musicians because they could express more emotion through the instrument than the harpsichord." The harpsichord First we will examine the harpsichord with our ears. Here is a song being played on the harpsichord.  Prelude BWV 998 Composed by, J.S. Bach, DEU 1735 Performed by Junghae Kim The song is beautifully played. Instantly I was able to pick up that timing, pace, and phrasing is what makes music great on t

Music Analysis #2: Freakin' out on the Interstate-Briston Maroney

Image
Freakin' out on the Interstate-Briston Maroney I first came across this song this past summer. I was immediately drawn into the chords of the song and the chill vibes it gave. The lyrics have so much depth behind them and that also drew me into loving it so much. I am a sucker for sad music, even when I am not sad at all. I've been through a lot in life though I am young, so I feel understanding/empathic often towards others. I can appreciate sad music though I'm not sad because of being able to relate/understand. Freakin' out on the Interstate is sung by Briston Maroney, and he wrote the song as well.  Freakin' out on the Interstate -Briston Maroney 2018, USA. My thoughts I love indie rock and I think he expresses himself so well through his singing, the chords of this song, and the meaning behind the lyrics. I love to listen to this song and just vibe to it. It was definitely my go to song to play while boating the Unalakleet river this past summer. Lyrics In th

Music Analysis #1 : Conversations in the Dark-John Legend

Image
Conversations in the Dark-John Legend I absolutely adore this song in so many ways. I was first introduced to the song when my SO and I were on a cruise in Cali. The song had just come out and I didn't know a thing about it but my SO played it for me and I found that to be the sweetest thing. Conversations in the Dark was written by John Legend, Gregg Wattenberg, Jesse Fink, Kellen Pomeranz, and Chance Pena. It was produced by Gregg Wattenberg and Pom Pom.    Conversations in the Dark by John Legend  2020, USA. My thoughts The lyrics in the song is what do it for me. They are so personal for me with my relationship. To have a love like this is so special and really it's everything. Also another aspect is what John Legend chooses for the music video, home videos of couples. That's so authentic. I love the piano in the song and how soft the melody is. How the song is pieced together is beautiful and I still cry sometimes while listening to the song. It is just that special t
